How are food companies getting away with poisoning our nation with genetically modified food
There are a few food companies and multinational corporations that run the food industry. Some of the big gun companies include Monsato and Dupont. These Vanderbilts of our time have monopolized the entire food industry and now have a lot of political weight and power. Monsanto is a company responsible for producing Agent Orange in the Vietnam War and the more recently developed herbicide Roundup. Monsanto is also responsible for genetically engineering soy beans so they will not be killed by Roundup. They developed this so that the herbicide can be applied directly to the soy bean crops, killing the weeds but not the soy beans. One of the major problems concerning this issue is the amount of power held by these large multinational corporations like Monsanto.
Ironically, Justice Clarence Thomas of the Supreme Court used to be an attorney-at-law for Monsanto. It is also alleged that Monsanto had connections to the Bush and Clinton administrations. Furthermore, the food industry has special protections under the law. There are bills in place that make it easier for these companies to sue people for "disparaging their product" and there are bills protecting these large companies from being sued. Large food companies will also sue even if they do not have a case just because they know that the majority of people cannot afford to fight them. This is almost a parallel to the battle with the meat packing industry in the early 1900’s. President Obama has to get his hand in these large companies and break them up similar to The Trust Buster president Theodore Roosevelt who broke up many large companies in the progressive era. It is possible for a company to become to big for anybody’s well-being.
